Art

From September 2024, we will offer A Level Photography in addition to Art. Both subjects may be taken together.

Mission Statement

Offer all learners opportunities for self-expression and creativity in a broad sense. Success at Key Stage Four and Five is underpinned by a strong emphasis on drawing and application of the formal elements throughout Key Stage Three. Teachers look to challenge and nurture confident, independent learners who enjoy the subject, and, who have an understanding of the context in which their work adds to the universal discourse of visual language.

  • Students should independently be able to develop ideas through sustained and focused investigations informed by contextual and other sources, demonstrating analytical and critical understanding.
  • Students should independently be able to explore and select appropriate resources, media, materials, techniques and processes, reviewing and refining ideas as work develops.
  • Students should independently be able to record ideas, observations and insights relevant to intentions, reflecting critically on work and progress.
  • Students should independently be able to present a personal and meaningful response that realises intentions and, where appropriate, makes connections between visual and other elements.

Assessment

This is guided by the Assessment Objectives released by OCR. Student work is marked in five distinct areas: Development, Exploration, Recording, Related Study and Presentation.

Teachers guide a range of tasks which will help students meet all five assessment objectives by the end of the two year course. All work produced on the two year course is put forward for final assessment. Levels of attainment are communicated to students using the schools Assessment Point systems.

I love researching different artists and incorporating their style into my own work. I love how we get to experiment with different mediums on the A Level course as I am able to develop my own style. Overall, I love Art and feel I have progressed well on the course so far.

- Jessica, Year 12

I love that especially now in Art we can experiment more with a variety of different mediums to find our own style. Our teachers have really helped me develop my Art skills over the last 2 years.

- Rebecca, Year 12
