Extended Learning (SEND)

"I praise you because I am fearfully and wonderfully made; your works are wonderful, I know that full well" (Psalm 139:14)

St Mary's Catholic School has high expectations for all students, that is lived out in our mission statement, 'Excellence for All'.

We ensure this occurs through:

High-quality teaching for pupils with Special Educational Needs (SEN) is the first step in the SEN Code of Practice, involving teachers adapting their practice to meet all needs, planning well-structured lessons, and setting high expectations.

This "Quality First Teaching" focuses on adaptation, effective use of assessment, and creating a positive and inclusive learning environment, with the understanding that additional support cannot replace good teaching.

An inclusive environment where individual strengths are celebrated and barriers to learning are removed.

An encompassing extra curricular programme that is broad and rich.

A regularly reviewed SEN register which identifies the individual needs and support of students.

A pupil profile which identifies the additional support for students identified with SEN, that is reviewed termly with students and parents and shared with all staff.

A standardised reading assessment to allow early identification of literacy gaps, with small nurture intervention groups to support the students to make progress more in line with their peers.

Highly trained Learning Support Assistants that offer in class support to support students learning.

Where can I find more guidance?

The Hertfordshire Local Offer signposts guidance and support for young people with SEN.  Details of the local offer can be found here.
