Examinations Advice
Please refer below for the information regarding public exams and adverse weather.
At St Mary’s, public examinations begin at 9AM and 1PM, students must be lined up by 8:45 and 12:45 respectively to ensure the examinations begin in a calm and orderly manner.
Students who are late for their examination cannot be guaranteed entry to the examination and students travelling by public transport should plan journey times accordingly. The beginning of the examination cannot be delayed for any reason; this includes train cancellations, train/bus delays and traffic issues.
JCQ Regulations
Public examinations commence at 9AM and the afternoon examinations at 1:30PM. A candidate will be considered very late if they arrive more than one hour after the awarding body’s published start time for an examination which lasts one hour or more i.e. after 10AM for a morning examination or after 2.30PM for an afternoon examination. If an examination lasts less than one hour a candidate will be considered very late if they arrive after the awarding body’s published finished time for the examination.
If the main school is closed due to adverse weather public examinations will still go ahead as per the JCQ regulations. If a student is unable to get to school safely to sit the examination, they will not be able to retake the module until the following summer with the exception of GCSE English Language and Mathematics. Examination boards will not allow papers to be taken at a later date in the exam series.
Exam Contingency Day 2026
In 2019 JCQ (Joint Council for Qualifications) introduced a contingency day for GCE and GCSE examinations, should sustained national or local disruption arise during the summer examination series.
In 2026, all examination candidates must be available for the whole day on Wednesday 24th June 2026 in the event that June examinations are rescheduled. This is not a school decision and applies to all candidates in all schools.
