Mission Statement 

Students will be inspired and equipped to pursue further study and/ or a career in the vital and challenging Health and care sector. Lessons will provide diverse opportunities for engaging with theory and practise, legislation and application of relevant and critical information to be not only a success in any part of the Healthcare employment sector but also as a critically reflective and solution-focused learner.

Subject: BTEC Health and Social Care

As part of the whole

 

It builds on logical reasoning and procedural solving students will have learned in GCSE Maths, critical textual analysis and fluent written expression students will have developed in GCSE English, and scientific research skills practised during GSCE Science.  Apart from these skills, content from History, Geography and Biology will be relevant to provide context for many of the theories and studies.

Academic – Curriculum Aims

Unit 1 and 2 will both be externally assessed in a written exam and count 58% towards the final grade.  Each exam with be 1 hour and 30 minutes and will include a range of short answer questions. The other two units will be internally assessed in a range of written reports designed to meet specific learning aims.  These count 42% towards the final grade. This prepares students to study a Psychology-related degree at university.

 

Spiritual

 

The teacher respects, supports and promotes the gospel values of St Mary’s. In sensitive topics like ‘Meeting the needs of individuals regardless of religion or sexual orientation’, the teacher reminds students of their Christian values.  The teacher reminds students they do not have to agree with the theories, legislation and codes of practice, but rather to engage with them from a professional point of view.

 

Moral

 

Within lesson planning and lesson delivery, the teacher models strong moral integrity that has its grounding in the Christian values of the St Mary’s.  The teacher knows their students well and can offer challenge and guidance where appropriate in class discussions and when critically evaluating Healthcare theories, legislation and codes of practice.

 

Cultural

 

In lesson planning and delivery, the teacher ensures that a variety of examples and images are used to reflect a range of cultures; furthermore, internal assessments require students to consider the healthcare for people from a range of different cultures.

 

Self

 

Students are encouraged to respect themselves and other students and staff. The teacher models this respect. Part of this is to value and respond to teacher feedback, to be a reflective learner, to look for opportunities to contribute thoughtfully to lessons and to feel safe in the learning environment to take learning risks like answering a question or asking one.

Health and Social Care is a valuable course that allows students to study topics like the physical, emotional and cognitive developments of humans over their life span; the impact these factors have on the ageing process and how this influences life choices.  They will also study the roles and responsibilities of midwives and social workers and other professionals who work in the health and social care sector.  A combination of theory, procedure and practise in the Health and Social Care sector is designed to prepare students for university education, and an eye to future employment in this sector.  The course has been developed by Pearson in collaboration with employers in the relevant professional bodies of the health and social care sectors, so the knowledge and skills are up-to-date and directly relevant to a career in this broad and growing employment sector.

Assessment

This subject will run over two years and cover 4 units of work.

Resources

St Mary’s will provide students with free access to online versions of the textbooks for year 1 and year 2 published by Illuminate. The school library also has an up-to-date selection of relevant books and some that will broaden students’ horizons beyond the course. Further links to suggested reading for each internal assessment will be provided.

I enjoyed looking into the conditions that someone may experience as it gave me an insight into what some people go through and will help me prepare for what I might come across in my desired career.
