Music Events 2019/2020

Winter Music Concert - February 2019

The Winter Concert was a great success, we had a huge selection of acts from an accordion solo to the school choir singing Amy Winehouse's classic "Valerie" and "This is me" from the much loved " Greatest Showman."  This year's programme included the largest number of students we have had in years working together to deliver a calm and delightful musical atmosphere.  We decided to include the winners and runners up of Battle of the Bands 2019. This concert was a huge success with the tech team and the Year 10 GCSE class working so efficiently and professionally, as well as all of the talented performers taking the time to rehearse and prepare their songs for this special event.  I would also like to thank Miss Mathews , Mrs Tatman and all the staff involved, who made sure the evening ran smoothly. We would like to especially congratulate Ben Year 11 on his stunning performance of Chopin's nocturne in B minor and 6th former's Maddie, Lucy and Holly for their wonderful trio performance.

Year 9 - Battle of the Bands - January 2020

An amazing 47 students participated in this year’s Battle of the Bands event. It was held at lunchtime and in the main school hall which meant that the audience numbers were huge. Nearly every single student in Year 9 turned up to support their peers which was amazing. We had a wide range of performances from Rick Astley’s ‘Never gonna give you up’ to ‘Believer’ by Imagine Dragons. The 3 judges were the current Year 12 A level music students (Ben Callington, Kelsey Crowley and Elijah Calderaro-Antoine) and they had an extremely tough job deciding the winners and runners up. There were 8 performances overall and the standard of music was excellent. Both the winners (Don’t Stop Believin’) and the runners up (Believer) were also invited to perform in the upcoming Spring Concert in March. All the participants received a certificate with the winners and runners up receiving a medal and their photo on the school twitter page. A hugely successful event which all took place during the 35 minute lunch break – incredible!

Spring Music Concert - March 2020

Our Spring Concert took place on the 11th March at 7pm and was an excellent showcase of the talent that our students have here at St Mary’s. It was an evening with so much variety both in terms of the different ensembles and solos that were performed but also of the range of musical genres that were covered. The Junior Choir performed a Bruno Mars number with the Wind Quintet performing some works by Mozart and Haydn. There were many talented soloists that performed and both the Year 10 and Year 11 GCSE music classes also performed a number including one of the GCSE set works ‘Since You’ve Been Gone’ by Rainbow. It was a sad occasion for many of our Year 13s as it was their last concert and they have contributed so much to the music department over the last 7 years so we wish them every success for their future.
